Constructed on reclaimed land in the 1970s and gradually expanding in the 1980s, the Diplomatic Area is Manama's financial district, housing hundreds of banks, investment firms and Takaful societies that serve the entire Persian Gulf. Most of the government ministries like the ''Ministry of Industry & Commerce'', ''Ministry of Works & Housing'' and the ''Ministry of Justice'' have their offices in the Diplomatic Area. The Central Bank of Bahrain is also headquartered in the Diplomatic Area. The Diplomatic Area also houses the Public Prosecution and the court of Bahrain. Skyscrapers like the Bahrain World Trade Centre are located in the Diplomatic Area.
